I never realized the impact creating Valley Stream Mom would have on my life. I simply set out to start a blog to inform the mothers of our community the goings on, how to’s, where to’s, etc. of VS because I couldn’t find a thing when I moved here with a 2 year old while 3-4 months pregnant. The trick to knowing what was going on in the community back around 2007 was being in nursery/elementary school where community flyers were often delivered.
After starting this blog and eventually a public Facebook page and Facebook group (for moms only) I found myself getting know more and more about what was actually going on in the community. Although I call the blog Valley Stream Mom, I don’t always know what’s happening in the community unless I go to look for it. This can be a tedious and timely task.
At times I want to delete everything and do nothing. But I’m in deep, folks. I’m in deep. I keep thinking about all of the new families moving into Valley Stream as well as those who have been here for some time that are just now having families. It reminds me that the reason why this blog exists is for them.
I’ve met some amazing, generous women through the blog and from my kid’s school. But what I have come to learn while managing various digital communities is that the moms of Valley Stream are extremely resourceful, opinionated, supporting, welcoming, jovial, informative and most importantly passionate about their community.
One mom will ask where you can find the best nail salon, hair salon, roofer, handyman, food delivery, day care, notary service, landscaper, DJ for the school fundraiser, OBGYN who takes Empire Plan, where to vote in he upcoming school election and at least 20 moms will answer. Others will lurk. But they’re still getting the info they need.
VS Moms are an amazing force to be reckoned with. We support each other in times of need. We cheer for each other. We even fuel the fire sometimes….We organize. We welcome new moms into the community where friendships are made and that’s the best thing about the moms of Valley Stream.
Happy Mother’s Day Valley Stream Moms!
