If you’ve ever wondered about planning a ski trip with kids, I have some great tips tried and true for you. For the last two years, we have enjoyed a ski and water park weekend getaway with friends in The Poconos. It’s just a short 2.5 hour drive from Long Island where we can getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city for some fun.
Two years ago we stayed at Great Wolf Lodge, but last year and again this year we will be staying at Kalahari Resorts and Spa.
Part of the bulk in planning a trip like this happens before you leave home. You have to make sure the kids stay warm which encourages then to stay out in the snow longer. Cold fingers and toes can completely ruin a great weekend.
Be sure to buy water proof snow pants, waterproof snow boots (see picture below), jackets, sweaters (my favorite!), wool socks and hats, long underwear, ear covers and snow goggles, and hand warmers. All of these items are absolute keys to a successful and fun day out in the snow. The first year we took the kids skiing, neither one of them complained about being cold. It was actually hard to get them to go inside for lunch.
Tips for enjoying Kalahari/Jack Frost Mountain
1. Book your spa treatment the day you book your room reservation.
Appointments usually book up quickly so don’t delay. You may need someone to smooth out those muscles after a day on the slopes.
2. Choose the early ski/snow tubing time because it gets crowded as the day goes by.
Parking is much easier the earlier you go.
3. Plan to each lunch early during tubing or bring your lunch. The food area gets very crowded.
If possible, see if you can reserve a space for you and your crew. If not, try to find a nearby restaurant.
4. Friday at the water park is usually slower than Saturday. If you arrive Friday, go!
Be sure to stop for a soak in the hot tub. Many have indoor/outdoor hot tub areas and sitting in warm, bubbling water while outside in the frigid air with a cocktail is amazing!

Here are photos of the two items I mentioned in the text above. I would wear these everyday if I could!
