When the book arrived, both of my kids told me we already had Ezra Jack Keats’ award-winning classic picture book, The Snowy Day. But what they didn’t know was that this favorite comes to life as an Amazon Original this Friday, November 25th on Amazon Prime. (Keep reading to see how you can win a copy of the book for your little one.)
We have tons of books, including another of Keats’ books, Whistle for Willie and honestly I can’t keep up with all of them. I had no idea The Snowy Day was written back in 1962 and was one of the first picture books for young children to portray a realistic, multicultural setting.
I immediately heard familiar voices as I watched the trailer shown below. Some of my personal favorites I recognized include Regina King (227), and Laurence Fishburne (Boy N Da Hood/Matrix/Black ‘ish), Angela Basset (What’s Love Got to Do With It), and Jamie-Lynn Sigler (Sopranos) are all a part of the film.
The special follows Peter, a young boy in a red snowsuit, as his mother sends him on an adventure to Nana’s house to retrieve their traditional Christmas mac and cheese dinner. Enjoying the snowy day along the way, Peter encounters friends from the neighborhood, from storekeepers and bakers to the older boys he admires – and a group of a capella singers voiced by Boyz II Men. You can also download the song Snowy Day sang by B2M on November 25th as well.
The Classic Story
After arriving at Nana’s and retrieving the mac and cheese – and his most coveted gift, a brand-new red sled – Nana helps Peter team up with the older boys for an epic snowball fight, resulting in the destruction of the special holiday dinner and his sled. When the neighborhood comes together to celebrate new traditions with Peter and his family, Peter realizes that the true meaning of the holiday is about who you spend it with.
