Registering your child for Kindergarten early has many advantages. One of them is simply getting it out of the way. Another is becoming familiar with the school your child will attend next year. You will be invited to preschool events where your child can meet and make new friends. Your child will be tested late next year to make sure they know the basics before entering school. If they do not, you then will have the summer to get them prepared.
Your child will be tested on the following:
- Recognition of letters and numbers
- Identification of beginning letter sounds
- Identification of basic shapes and colors
- Counting objects
- Fine Motor Skills
- Cutting on a line
- Writing their first name
- Holding the pencil and scissors
Registration packets to your child’s school can be found on the school website. Registration dates change year to year but usually take place in the Fall for the following school year.
VSMom Tip: It’s best to register early for Kindergarten so your child can take advantage of any scheduled Preschool visitation events that take place beginning as early as January. This helps your child get used to the school they will attend next fall, meet new friends and helps them learn new skills needed for Kindergarten.
